Rationalists With Nostalgia for Religion

M. Paul Hazard  described the Deists of this time (17th and 18th centuries)  ‘as rationalists with nostalgia for religion’: men, that is, who had allowed the spirit of the age to separate them from orthodoxy, but who liked to believe that the slope they had started upon was not slippery enough to lead them to atheism.
